Possible first order transition in the two-dimensional Ginzburg- Landau model induced by thermally fluctuating vortex cores

چکیده
We study the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model of a neutral superfluid in the vicinity of the vortex unbinding transition. The model is mapped onto an effective interacting vortex gas by a systematic perturbative elimination of all fluctuating degrees of freedom (amplitude and phase of the order parameter field) except the vortex positions. In the Coulomb gas descriptions derived previously in the literature, thermal amplitude fluctuations were neglected altogether. We argue that, if one includes the latter, the vortices still form a twodimensional Coulomb gas, but the vortex fugacity can be substantially raised. Under the assumption that Minnhagen’s generic phase diagram of the twodimensional Coulomb gas is correct, our results then point to a first order transition rather than a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, provided the Ginzburg-Landau correlation length is large enough in units of a microscopic cutoff length for fluctuations. The experimental relevance of these results is briefly discussed.

Conductivity of thermally fluctuating superconductors in two dimensions
We review recent work on a continuum, classical theory of thermal fluctuations in two dimensional superconductors. A functional integral over a Ginzburg-Landau free energy describes the amplitude and phase fluctuations responsible for the crossover from Gaussian fluctuations of the superconducting order at high temperatures, to the vortex physics of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at lower t...
متن کاملExact solutions of the 2D Ginzburg-Landau equation by the first integral method
The first integral method is an efficient method for obtaining exact solutions of some nonlinear partial differential equations. This method can be applied to non integrable equations as well as to integrable ones. In this paper, the first integral method is used to construct exact solutions of the 2D Ginzburg-Landau equation.

In this paper, we obtain exact solutions involving parameters of some nonlinear PDEs in mathmatical physics; namely the one-dimensional modified complex Ginzburg-Landau equation by using the $ (G'/G) $ expansion method, homogeneous balance method, extended F-expansion method. By using homogeneous balance principle and the extended F-expansion, more periodic wave solutions expressed by j...
متن کاملLangevin Simulation of Nonlocal Ginzburg-Landau Model for Superconductors in a Magnetic Field
We numerically investigate the phenomenological nonlocal Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian for two-dimensional superconductors in a strong magnetic field by Langevin equation. We calculate the structure factor and Abrikosov factor at various temperatures. We also evaluate the specific heat and obtain a cusp which indicates the melting of the vortex lattice. متن کاملOn the Nature of the Phase Transition Triggered by Vortex-Like Deffects in the 2D Ginzburg-Landau Model
The two dimensional lattice Ginzburg-Landau hamiltonian is simulated numerically for different values of the coherence length ξ in units of the lattice spacing a, a parameter which controls amplitude fluctuations. The phase diagram on the plane T − ξ is measured. Amplitude fluctuations change dramatically the nature of the phase transition: for values of ξ/a ≃ 1 , instead of the smooth Kosterli...
